Description

A mid 19th Century Swiss quarter repeating cylinder in an open face case engraved with a scene of a provincial French castle.  Keywind gilt bar movement with suspended going barrel.   Plain cock with polished steel regulator, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. Slide quarter repeating on two polished steel gongs. White enamel dial with Roman numerals, gilt hands. 18 carat open face case the back engraved with a scene of a castle standing by a river, marked “Coeuvre – France”.   Coin edge middle with a gold slide at two o’clock.  Wound and set through the engine turned cuvette bearing details of the movement, maker’s mark “PR” in an oval.

The scene on the back of this watch is of the castle at Coeuvres-et-Valsery, about 60 miles northeast of Paris.  It is unusual for a scene to be identified.  At the time of writing the somewhat dilapidated castle is being offered for sale at 700,000 euros.
