Description
A late 19th Century Swiss cylinder open face character prize watch. Keyless gilt bar movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator. plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Plain nickle open face case, the back engraved with the cartoon character Ally Sloper above ” A. Sloper. F.O.M.” (Friend of Man). The cuvette engraved “ally Sloper's Half Holiday.
These watches were given as prizes by the British comics magazine, Ally Sloper's Half Holiday. Published weekly from 1884 to 1916 by “The Sloperies”, 99 Shoe Lane, London.
