Silver Pair Cased Cylinder by Mudge
£2,900.00
A mid 18th Century English cylinder by Mudge in silver pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with square baluster pillars. Gilt dust cover signed "Thos Mudge - Wm Dutton - London", aperture to reveal the silver index. Pierced and engraved masked cock, large diamond endstone in a polished steel setting, silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, original Graham type banking pin, large brass escape wheel. Fine white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Matching silver pair cases Hallmarked London 1772, silver pendant and bow, maker's mark "JM" in a rectangle.
A rare opportunity to acquire a watch by one of the most eminent makers of the 18th Century. The movement number indicates a date of about 1761 and is signed solely for Thomas Mudge. The dust cover however is signed for Mudge & Dutton. It was 1765 when watches with their combined signature were first produced, continuing Mudge's numbering sequence. The cases are hallmarked for 1772 and appear original, or at least purpose made for the movement. There are a number of reasons this may have occurred but most likely it was returned to the firm for refurbishment having lost its dust cover and the case (probably in gold) was damaged or engraved for a previous owner.
