A rare early 20th Century Swiss minute repeating three gong grande sonnerie clockwatch in a gold full hunter case. Gilt three quarter plate jewelled keyless movement with two going barrels. One barrel for the going train, the other for the grand sonnerie minute repeat, wound by the crown being turned in both directions. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Club foot lever escapement, escape pivots with endstones. Small push button in the band to release the minute repeating on three polished steel gongs. Striking the hours and quarter on three gongs every fifteen minutes and also the minutes at will. Signed restored white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Arabic numerals, blue steel hands. Plain 18 carat full hunter case, gold button in the band at six o'clock, gold cuvette and bow. Small lateral lever at two o'clock marked "Chime - Silence" to disable the clockwatch, maker's mark "LW" in a rectangle.
A rare Carillon minute repeating clockwatch made by C?zar Racine, Le Locle, (1851-1931). The company, located at 2 Avenue du Nouveau College, specialized in striking and repeating watches. Best known for its Grande Sonnerie minute repeater watches striking on two or three gongs Racine took out patents for them as early as 1893. This watch is based on two Swiss patents, 16112 and 18543, granted in 1898 and 1899 respectively. Racine appears to have been a great innovator registering a number diverse patents. He was awarded a Gold medal at the Swiss National Exhibition of Geneva in 1896 and a Grand Prix at the World Exhibition of Paris in 1900. They supplied movements to many Swiss companies, notably Zenith who often used this form of clockwatch. Casemakers mark, Louis Weill & Co La Chaux-de-Fonds. Based in Switzerland with representation in London importing watches around the turn of the Century. Specialising in high-quality pocket watches with complications such as repeaters, clockwatches, split-seconds chronographs as well as luxury enamelled items.
