An unusual late 19th Century Swiss quarter repeating lever in a silver open face case. Gilt three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel. Engraved cock with polished steel regulator, compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Slide quarter repeating on a single polished steel gong, the single hammer striking a double blow for each quarter. Clip on white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Plain silver open face case. Gilt winding crown, silver cuvette, bow and repeat slide in the band.
A rare form of quarter repeating mechanism in excellent overall condition. Patent 10090 by Carl Hahlweg 1895 for the distinctive form of repeater. Unlike conventional repeaters the mainspring is replaced by a strong rectangular wire spring acting directly on the hour rack. The striking is slowed by a short train of wheels situated under the dial. The quarter rack has three sets of two teeth acting on a single hammer. This system would have been more economical to produce without sacrificing reliability.
