Gold English Half Hunter

A late 19th Century English lever in a gold half hunter case.  Full plate gilt keyless movement with going barrel under a bridge. Plain cock with garnet endstone, compensation balance with blue steel spiral hairspring.  English table roller lever escapement, screwed in jewelling, escape pivots with endstones.  Numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel half hunter hands. Plain 18 carat half hunter case with blue enamel chapter ring, gold bow.  Both covers bearing the number corresponding to that on the movement and dial.  The front cover with maker's mark "EM" in a rectangle.  The back with maker's mark "FT" in an oval hallmarked London 1900.  Engraved crest on the back cover of Sir George Edward Dallas, Bart, of Petsal, Staffordshire - the motto "Lux Venit Ab Alto" translates as "Light Cometh from on High".

In excellent overall condition.  Keyless full plate going barrel watches are not common.  Casemaker Edward Matthews, 21 Spencer Street.  The back cover made by the renowned casemaker Frederick Thoms, also of Spencer Street, Nos. 25 and 41.  It is probable the rear cover was changed to change the engraving, either due to change of rank or ownership.  Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd were founded in September 1871 in London by officers of the Army and Navy in order to obtain lower prices on domestic goods.  Shortly after they opened a store in Victoria Street eventually commissioning products for sale under their own name.  Watches were almost always supplied by the best London makers of the time.
