Gilt English Pedometer

A late 18^th Century English pedometer in a gilt consular case.  Brass mechanism with star wheel and rocking bar actuated by a chain attached to a pulley. Sprung friction device compensating for large movements of the clip.  Each step taken by the wearer advances the hand by one division.  Signed white enamel dial the centre hand marked to one hundred steps.  The two subsidiaries marked for one mile and twelve miles, Arabic numerals, fine blue steel hands.  Gilt metal case, long hinged gilt bar and chain.
