Description

A late 18th Century English pedometer in a shagreen and gilt consular case.  Brass mechanism with star wheel and rocking bar actuated by a chain attached to a pulley. Sprung friction device compensating for large movements of the clip.  Each step taken by the wearer advances the hand by one division.  Signed white enamel dial the centre hand marked to one hundred steps.  The two subsidiaries marked for one mile and twelve miles, Arabic numerals, fine blue steel hands.  Gilt metal case covered in shagreen and decorated with gilt pique pins. Long rectangular section brass bar, unusually the hinge aligns with the bezels.

The marking on the dial indicate this pedometer was intended to be used on horseback.  Spencer and Perkins,  London (Snow Hill) – Pedometer in the Guildhall Museum.
