Brass Calibre Duplex by Barwise

£1,750.00

An early 19th Century English duplex by Barwise in a gilt metal consular case.  Full plate gilt keywind fusee brass calibre movement.  Plain cock with diamond endstone, polished steel regulator the index pins acting through a slot in the table.  Plain four arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring.  Duplex escapement, large brass escape wheel, pivots with endstones. Numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gilt hands. Plain gilt metal consular case, the bezel and back sharing the same hinge, maker's mark "AG" over "JM" and number corresponding to that on the movement.

A good example of an English duplex.  An eminent firm of watchmakers.  John Barwise was one of a panel asked to adjudicate in the dispute between Arnold and Earnshaw in 1805.  They traded as Barwise and Sons for a short period, 1819 - 23, at 24 St Martin's Lane.  Casemaker James Dow, 15 St. James' Buildings.  They produced these brass calibre movements incorporating most of the escapements common at the time.  Steel was only used where necessary to minimise the effect of magnetism.  Casemaker Ann Grove and James Melvill, 9 Vineyard Walk.
