Rare Napoleonic Automaton Verge

A rare late 18^th Century verge automaton depicting the battle of Arcola in a silver pair cases. Full plate gilt fusee movement. Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with endstone in a polished steel setting, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator dial with gilt indicator. White enamel dial, small subsidiary of Arabic numerals, blue steel hands. The lower half of the dial in polychrome enamel depicting the battle of Arcola. Napoleon on the left bearing a flag, riding a black horse onto the bridge followed by his troops. On the right Croatian and Austrian forces firing cannon. In the centre of the bridge a semi-circular opening reveals a rotating disc painted with cavalry riders appearing to charge across the bridge as the watch runs. Above the scene the text “Bataille bei Arcola gewonnen von Bonaparte – d16ten Novbr 1795”. Matching silver pair cases, silver pendant and bow, the inner only bearing faded hallmarks.

Wound through the signed fully restored white enamel dial, Arabic numerals, gold hands. Small gold case, the split pearl set front bezel opened by depressing the button in the rectangular gold and enamel pendant. The back set with a geometric pattern of split pearls. Maker’s mark “CBH” and number corresponding to that on the movement.

English rack lever escapement, adjustable slides to the lever pivots, large thirty tooth escape wheel. Off white enamel dial with Roman numerals, gilt hands. Fitted in matching silver pair cases hallmarked Birmingham 1839. Silver oval pendant and bow, maker's mark “VR”.

Rare Diamond Set Visible Balance Pendant Watch

A small early 19^th Century Swiss watch with visible diamond set balance in a gold and enamel diamond set shield shaped case. The unusual full plate cylinder movement following the form of the case with the balance visible on the front. Very slender bar supporting the diamond endstone, four arm balance bearing four small diamonds. The balance above a blue steel ground decorated with a polished steel cross. Below the balance a small white enamel dial of Arabic numerals, blue steel hands. Blue and white champleve enamel mask bearing two serpents frame the balance and dial. Rock crystal cabochon protecting the dial and balance. The front and back borders of the case set with graduated diamonds of varying cuts, diamond set gold bow. Hinged gold back, polychrome enamel floral decoration on translucent dark blue enamel over an engine turned ground. Under the lid the winding, setting and adjusting squares. Slender gold key set with three diamonds, the top reflecting the shape of the case. Small red morocco presentation box.
