Gilt Metal and Porcelain Watch Decoration

A large late 19th Century toy or decoration in the form of a watch. Hinged circular gilt metal frame set with two convex porcelain covers. The front with a representation of a watch dial, the numeral in cartouches at the edge. White centre with polychrome floral decoration. The back gilt in colour with a raised geometric pattern. The inner faces white, again with polychrome floral decoration. Tapered gilt metal pendant with fixed bow.

A rare and attractive piece. Apparently originally sold as a Christmas tree decoration.

An unusual late 19th Century heart shaped desk clock. Small circular Swiss going barrel key wound and set watch movement mounted in a silver circular watch frame. Circular white enamel dial with Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Unusual heart shaped case, the half round frame of chased and engraved floral repousse work, makers mark “E.L” in a rectangle. Silver wire easel stand. Signed octagonal black morocco cover fitted case with two hinged doors. Fitted lined dark blue velvet interior.

A fine late 19th Century Swiss cylinder ball watch and matching chain. Unusual keyless gilt movement constructed with the train wheels above the going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator. Plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. Small white enamel dial with blue Arabic numerals, the 12 o'clock marking in red, gilt minute markings and hands. The case is constructed in three parts, the gold middle with applied gold bead decoration. The two gold hemispheres with applied gold wire decoration. Gold hand set button and ring pendant. The watch is wound and set by turning the top hemisphere of the case in relation to the lower hemisphere. Black fabric cord with gilt fastener.

Gold Minute Repeater with Russian Coat of Arms

A late 19^th Century Swiss minute repeater in a fine engine turned full hunter case bearing the coat of arms of the Russian Empire. Keyless nickelled bar movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator. Compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Club foot lever escapement, escape and lever pivots with endstones. Slide minute repeating on two polished steel gongs. White enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, gilt hands. Substantial engine turned 18 carat full hunter case, gold slide in the band to actuate the repeater. The front cover depicts the coat of arms of the Russian Empire in black enamel, the ribbon joining the three crowns in blue enamel. Gold cuvette signed in Cyrillic “Pavel Buhre his Majesty’s Court Supplier”. Inside the front cover a dedication which translated as “Most Merciful it was granted to the artist of the French Troupe of the St. Petersburg Emperor’s Theatre – L Gistrily 1890”

Engraved cock with polished steel regulator, compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. White enamel dial with centre seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gilt hands. Large English plain silver open face case with slide in the band to stop the watch. Plain back with vacant oval cartouche, wound and set through the silver cuvette, maker's mark “LJ” in a rectangle.

Silver and Enamel Singing Bird Box

A late 19^th Century Swiss automated singing bird in a silver and enamel box. Brass going barrel movement keywound through the base. Small bellows and piston mechanism provides air to a variable whistle to mimic birdsong operated by a system of cams and levers. The bird covered with multi-coloured feathered plumage, iridescent highlights to bib and wings. Moving the pull at the side of the box causes the oval lid to open and the bird to hinge into an upright position, rising through chased and pierced gilt grille. While playing the automated bird moves its bone beak, flaps its wings, bobs its tail feather and moves from side-to-side, synchronised to the continuous birdsong. Unusual silver box enamelled on all faces apart from the base. The four sides with polychrome enamel landscapes and central oval cartouches depicting cherubs. The top with polychrome enamel depicting goddesses and cherubs at the four corners. Gilt frame to the polychrome enamel oval lid with two cherubs and doves. Key wound through the plain base, key in the shape of a bird.

The hemispheres of engraved gold foliate decoration set with very small diamonds. The watch is wound and set by turning the top hemisphere of the case in relation to the lower hemisphere. Suspended from a short gold chain from a plain gold bar, pin with safety catch. In a blue velvet lined blue presentation box.

Fine matching diamond set gold and enamel brooch formed to resemble leaves and a flower. In a shaped red morocco gilt decorated presentation case lined with black velvet.

Signed engine turned silver dial with subsidiaries for power reserve and seconds, Arabic numerals, blue steel hands. Plain 18 carat half hunter case, the front cover with an unusually large glazed aperture, blue enamel chapter ring. Plain gold cuvette, maker’s mark “TR” in a rectangle and number corresponding to that on the movement. Brown morocco covered case with easel stand.

Enamelled Singing Bird Box and Watch

A 20^th Century Swiss enamelled singing bird box with silvered mounts and fitted oval watch. Small lever watch movement mounted in the front of the box. Wound and set by a crown under the box, silvered oval dial with gilt centre, blue steel hands. Singing bird mechanism with going barrel wound by key below the box. Small bellows mechanism providing air to a variable whistle operated by a system of cams and levers. The rod at the side of the box is pulled to start the bird singing. The oval lid rises and a bird appears, turning from side to side, flapping its wings and moving its beak. When the song is finished the bird falls backwards and the lid closes. Rectangular box standing on four small ball feet. The faces of translucent red enamel over an engine turned ground framed by engraved silvered mounts. The repousse scene on the oval door is of a couple embracing on a bench surrounded by birds.
