Gold Swiss Gondolo by Patek Philippe

An early 20th Century Swiss Gondolo “chronometer” lever watch by Patek Philippe in a gold open face case. High quality keyless gilt bar movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel micrometer regulator adjusted by a snail cam, steel pointer on the plate. Compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Club foot lever escapement, the lever with counterbalance extension arms extended beyond the pallets. Escape and lever pivots with endstones in polished steel settings. Snailed steel wolf’s teeth winding work.

Signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman and Arabic numerals, gilthands, blue steel seconds hand. Substantial 18 carat open face case with faded engine turning, gold cuvette bearing the inscription “Chronometro Gondolo – 161022 Patek, Philippe & Cie, Geneve. — Fabricado expressamento para Gondolo & Labouriau Relojociros Rio de Janeiro”. Accompanied by a certificate from Patek Philippe showing the watch was manufactured in 1910 and sold in January 1911.

Two Day Marine Chronometer by Kullberg

A 20^th Century English two day marine chronometer by Kullberg. Full plate spotted keywind reverse fusee movement marked with the broad ministry arrow above “I”, four turned pillars secured by blue steel screws. Harrison’s maintaining power with steel click and blue steel spring. Polished steel barrel ratchet wheel and double toothed click on the spotted barrel bridge. Spotted cock with diamond endstone in a polished steel setting. Two arm compensation balance with two circular weights, Kullberg’s later form of middle-error temperature compensation, large timing screws and nuts, freesprung palladium helical hairspring. Earnshaw spring detent escapement, escape pivots with endstones. The movement secured to the gilt dial plate by three blue steel screws. Engraved signed and numbered silvered brass dial with broad ministry arrow, “I” and date, subsidiaries for seconds and power reserve indication, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Numbered turned brass bowl, rotating shutter to the winding hole, screw brass bezel with flat glass. Brass gimbals and locking mechanism, brass ratchet key. Three tier mahogany box, hinged flush brass handles, later top lid. Rectangular plaque engraved with the maker’s name, number, date, broad ministry arrow and “Two Days”. Included is a photocopy of a letter to the Director General of Stores at the India Office signed by the Astronomer Royal recommending the purchase of this chronometer.

Freesprung compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. English table roller lever escapement. Screwed in jewelling, escape and lever pivots with endstones. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Substantial plain silver open face case with extended hand set. Gilt winding button, plain silver cuvette, maker's mark “ATO” in an oval and number corresponding to that on the movement. The back engraved “H.S. 2”, front bezel made without a recess for a glass. Mahogany deck box originally constructed as three tier and converted to two. Signed, numbered circular bone plaque marked with the broad ministry arrow on the top lid. Secured in a brass drum by a glazed brass screw bezel.

In excellent overall condition.

Large push button for the repeat and a small button for the chronograph in the band.

It is unusual to find English assay import marks on this type of watch. The lids are also of heavier gauge

A fine large early 20^th Century English tourbillion in a silver open face case and deck box. Gilt half plate keyless movement with going barrel. Rare flying 6 minute tourbillion carriage rotating once every six minutes. Plain cock with diamond endstone. Compensation balance with freesprung blue steel overcoil hairspring. English table roller lever escapement. Screwed in jewelling, escape and lever pivots with endstones. Signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Substantial plain silver open face case with gold hand set, hinge and thumb pieces, gilt winding button, silver bow. Maker's mark “W.B” in a rectangle and number corresponding to that on the movement. Fitted in a three tier mahogany deck box with brass furniture, signed and numbered circular bone plaque on the lid. Two spare flat glass crystals.

A very rare variation on the tourbillion rotating escapement. Although the carriage resembles that of a centre seconds karrusel it is directly driven by the train. The carriage of a karrusel is passively rotated by one of the train wheels. This carriage rotates more slowly than a one minute tourbillion as it also carries the fourth wheel. Examples of this form of tourbillion are very rare, this example being in excellent condition and benefiting from having a deck box. The firm of Joseph White manufactured watches in Earlsdon, Coventry. Much of their high quality output was sold to the Admiralty. Casemaker William Bullock
