Late English Silver Verge

A late 19^th Century English verge with silver dial in a silver engine turned case. Full plate fusee movement with round pillars. Pierced and engraved round cock, steel regulator on top plate below the plain three arm steel balance. Silver engine turned dial with engraved centre, applied gold Roman numerals, gilt hands. Engine turned silver open face case with engine turned middle, maker's mark “WHH” and number corresponding to that on the movement.

An unusually late example of a watch with verge escapement.

Harrison’s maintaining power. Plain cock with diamond endstone, compensation balance employing quarter timing nuts, freesprung blue steel double overcoil hairspring. English double roller lever escapement, screwed in jewelling including the fusee, escape and lever pivots with endstones under a bridge cock. Numbered white enamel dial with subsidiaries for power reserve and seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Substantial plain 18 carat half hunter case with blue enamel chapter ring, the back engraved with an interesting motto. Gold cuvette engraved with the name of the original owner. Gold bow and gilt winding button, maker’s mark “FT” in an oval. The winding disabled when the front cover is closed.

It is unusual to find power reserve indication on English watches with centre seconds or with going barrel.

Substantial large plain silver open face case with gold hinges, maker's mark “F.T” in an oval.

A fine example of late full plate chronometer deck watch in excellent condition. Although signed for St Petersburg the watch is almost certainly of English manufacture, probably by Kullberg who is said to have supplied all his chronometers. August Ericsson, 1842-1910, opened a workshop in St. Petersburg, Russia about1875. He supplied marine chronometers to the Imperial Russian Navy. He often used movements from chronometer maker Victor Kullberg, also from Sweden who set up business in England in 1856. Celebrated casemaker Fred Thoms moved to 41 Spencer Street, Clerkenwell in 1889

A rare late 19^th Century striking clock with lever tourbillion platform in a four glass polished brass case. Large rectangular polished brass eight day movement with two going barrels. Steel hour and half-hour rack striking work visible on the back plate. Rare large rectangular tourbillion platform visible through a glazed aperture in the top of the case. Long polished steel carriage pivoted under a diagonal polished steel bridge. Compensation balance with freesprung spiral hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Signed plain gilt dial with silvered mask. White enamel chapter ring with Roman numerals, the two winding squares below. Blue steel Breguet hands. Four glass polished brass case with bow fronted hinged glazed door, plain top with square aperture revealing the platform.

An interesting clock. The tourbillion was introduced to cancel out positional errors. Its use in a platform has no technical advantage but does allow the maker to display his skill
