Silver Mystery Watch

A late 19^th Century Swiss mystery watch in a silver double sided case. The gilt cylinder movement relegated to the crescent shaped portion of the watch between the glass dial and the pendant. Keyless with going barrel, the crown turning in one direction only. Small plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring, polished steel regulator. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. Glass dial with gilt Arabic numerals, and minute ring, decorative engraved silver masks. The blue steel hands are driven by a glass disc which has a toothed brass wheel attached to its outer edge engaging the train. The miniature motion work for the hands is set between another glass disc and the dial. There is no provision to set the hands apart from moving them manually, which is common in these watches. Plain silver case glazed back and front. Rectangular button in the band to release the sprung front cover, silver crown and bow.

Automatic winding work set above the plate carries a weight set at the side which oscillates as the wearer walks, safety mechanism to avoid over-winding. White enamel dial with subsidiaries for power reserve and seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Square shaped decorative silver case, the back chased and engraved with stylised birds of prey. Numbered silver cuvette engraved with details of the watch unusually clipping inside the body of the case. Hinged front cover with circular glazed aperture opening to reveal a second glazed bezel and hand set lever. Shaped silver bow and gilt winding crown.

Signed white enamel dial, subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel Breguet hands. Rare 18 carat gold cabriolet case which can be used either as a full hunter or as an open face. The inner gold case with engine turned and florally engraved back and engine turned middle, gold cuvette. This can be used on its own or placed in the three section gold outer case with either the dial or back visible. When the dial is shown the watch still appears to be a conventional open face watch with the engraved back depicting a couple in a garden, Alternatively with the back of the inner visible the watch becomes a full hunter, the winding crown serving to open the sprung front cover.
