Two Day Marine Chronometer by Kullberg
A late 19th Century English two day marine chronometer by Kullberg in a brass bound mahogany box. Full plate spotted keywind reverse fusee movement, four turned pillars secured by blue steel screws. Harrison's maintaining power with steel click and blue steel spring. Blue steel barrel ratchet wheel and double toothed click on the spotted barrel bridge. Spotted cock with diamond endstone, two arm compensation balance with two circular weights, small timing screws and large timing nuts, freesprung palladium helical hairspring. Earnshaw spring detent escapement, escape pivots with endstones. The movement secured to the gilt dial plate by three blue steel screws. Engraved signed and numbered silvered brass dial with broad ministry arrow, details of medals awarded and countries supplied. Subsidiaries for seconds and power reserve indication, Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gold hands. Turned brass bowl, sprung rotating shutter to the winding hole, screw brass bezel with flat glass. Brass gimbals and locking mechanism, numbered brass ratchet key. Three tier dark mahogany box, hinged flush brass handles and stringing to the front, top lid covered with a thin layer of plywood. Rectangular ivory plaque below the lock with the maker's name engraved.
This chronometer was purchased from a member of the public during World War 2. Extract from the records at Greenwich. Victor Kullberg was born in Sweden in 1824 and moved to London in 1851 where he established a business making fine watches and chronometers. In addition to selling under his own name he also supplied to many English retailers. He almost always used the fusee in a reverse configuration to reduce friction and wear on the arbors. He experimented with balances on his chronometers patenting flat rim varieties. His chronometers won many medals for their timekeeping in the later half of the 19th Century. Silver Hunter with Concealed Erotic Automata
A late 19th Century quarter repeating Swiss lever with a concealed erotic scene in a silver full hunter case. Nickelled three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel, five armed star above the plate to actuate the automaton. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Slide quarter repeating on two gongs. Engraved silver dial with applied gilt decoration to the centre, subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Profusely engraved silver full hunter case, the front cover with a vacant shield shaped cartouche below the depiction of a lion, silver slide in the band. False cuvette opening to reveal the polychrome enamel erotic scene of a three figures above a silver ground decorated with a blue enamel lattice. The polychrome enamel figures engaged in an amorous encounter spring to life when the repeat mechanism is activated.

A late 19th Century Swiss cylinder with unusual 24 hour dial in a silver engine turned open face case. Gilt three quarter plate keywind movement with going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. Unusual dial, silvered mask marked “Patent”, with eleven circular apertures and small seconds subsidiary at six o’clock, blue steel hands. The apertures in the mask either show black Roman numerals from one to twelve or red Arabic numerals thirteen to twenty four on a white enamel ring. Harrison's maintaining power. Plain cock with diamond endstone. Compensation balance with white metal helical hairspring. Earnshaw type chronometer escapement with short detent spring. Screwed in jewelling including the arbors of the fusee, escape pivots with endstones. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiaries for power reserve and seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Substantial plain 18 carat open face case, gold cuvette with apertures to allow the watch to be wound and set by key if desired. Gold hand set under the back cover which also disables the winding crown when the cover is closed.
A fine watch in excellent condition which has many features associated with accurate timekeeping of the period. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiaries for continuous seconds and 60 minute record. Fifth seconds markings for the flyback centre seconds chronograph, Roman numerals, blue steel hands and polished steel split seconds hand. Very substantial plain 18 carat open face case with thief proof swivel bow, engraved monogram on the back cover. Chronograph operated by the gold crown, split seconds by a button in the band. Maker's mark “HMF” in a rectangle and number corresponding to that on the movement. Accompanied by Frodsham certificate.
