Rare Niello Lute

A small late 19^th Century Swiss cylinder watch in a rare silver niello case in the form of a lute.. Keywind gilt bar movement with suspended going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator. plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, gilt hands. Small engine turned silver open face case, a four leaf clover engraved on the back. Gilt metal cuvette, maker's mark “R & Co”. The watch sits in a compartment in the back of an unusual silver niello case in the form of a lute. The well made silver lute is decorated on the sound board in black niello work, the dial visible through the glazed soundhole. The neck is similarly decorated to imitate the finger board above which are four gilt metal strings running through a silver bridge. Fine teardrop shaped hinged bowl decorated in a fine checkerboard pattern of niello work housing the watch. The end of the neck is turned over to form a hook.

Silver Loehr Perpetual Pocket Watch

A late 19^th Century Swiss pedometer wind lever in a silver full hunter case. Gilt three quarter plate movement with going barrel wound by an oscillating weight. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, compensation balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. Automatic winding work set above the plate carries a weight set at the side which oscillates as the wearer walks, safety mechanism to avoid over-winding. Signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Engine turned silver full hunter case, the flyspring for the font cover lacking. Signed and numbered silver cuvette, aperture to allow the watch to be wound by key if desired and central thumbwheel for hand set.

Travelling Barometer and Compass Set

A late 19^th Century travelling set consisting of a barometer, compass and thermometer. Gilt cased aneroid pocket barometer with rotating bezel marked in feet, gilt ring bow. Silvered metal dial, blue steel hand. Matching gilt pocket compass, the direction indicated be a rotating mother of pearl disc marked with the points of the compass. Gilt winding button rotating to lock the disc. Both housed in a red morocco case lined with green velvet. Between them a small mercury thermometer on a bone scale marked in Fahrenheit and centigrade.

Diamond and Garnet Set Gold Chatelaine Watch

A late 19^th Century Swiss cylinder in a fine diamond and garnet set fob watch with matching chatelaine. Keyless gilt bar movement, frosted steel wolf's teeth winding work, going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. White enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, gilt hands. Gold open face case with plain gold cuvette. The back set with a large cabochon garnet surrounded by a row of diamonds. Diamond set oval bow. Matching gold chatelaine of pierced chased and engrave links, a fleur dis lis at the centre. On the buckle two oval cabochon garnets, also set in a row of diamonds. A representation of a gold crown stands above. The buckle with a hinged pin at the back to allow the watch to be worn as a brooch.

Keyless Fusee Chronometer by Kullberg

A late 19^th Century English keyless reverse fusee chronometer by Kullberg with power reserve indication fitted in a silver display case. Gilt half plate keyless movement with reverse fusee and chain. Harrison's maintaining power. Plain cock with diamond endstone. Compensation balance with freesprung blue steel overcoil hairspring. Earnshaw type chronometer escapement with short detent spring. Screwed in jewelling including the arbors of the fusee, escape pivots with endstones. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiaries for power reserve and seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Fitted in a purpose made silver display case glazed on both sides, silver pendant and bow.

The movement similar to the other chronometer by Kullberg in this catalogue. A little earlier and larger, configured to be fitted in a hunter case. The English type winding has not been utilised in this display case but the movement can still be wound and set with a key. Victor Kullberg was born in Sweden in 1824 and moved to London in 1851 where he established a business making fine watches and chronometers. In addition to selling under his own name he also supplied to many English retailers. He almost always used the fusee in a reverse configuration to reduce friction and wear on the arbors. He experimented with balances on his chronometers patenting flat rim varieties. His chronometers won many medals for their timekeeping in the later half of the 19th Century. The firm continued making chronometers after his death in 1890

Gold Quarter Repeating Independent Seconds Hunter

A rare late 19^th Century Independent seconds quarter repeating lever in a gold half hunter case. Keyless gilt bar movement with two suspended going barrels, the larger for the going train. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, compensation balance with overcoil hairspring. Club foot lever escapement. The three trains fully jewelled, escape, lever and last two of the seconds train pivots with endstones. Slide quarter repeating on two polished steel gongs. White enamel dial with independent jump centre seconds, Roman numerals, fine blue steel half hunter hands. Engine turned 18 carat half hunter case with coin edge middle, blue enamelled gold chapter ring fixed by four gold screws. Gold winding button, the going train wound in one direction and the Independent seconds train the other. Gold slide for the quarter repeat and a small one for the independent centre seconds. Signed gold cuvette with addresses in Paris and London.

It is rare to find the combination of repeat work and Independent seconds, especially with keyless winding. This watch appears to have not been used, the engine turning still very crisp
