Engine turned silver open face case with ribbed middle, vacant shield shaped cartouche and garter on the back. Maker's mark “EW” and number corresponding to that on the movement.

Gold Independent Seconds Lever by Nicole Nielsen

A 19^th Century English Independent centre seconds lever made by Nicole Nielsen in a gold open face case. Gilt three quarter plate keyless movement with going barrel. Nicole's patent winding work with extra wheel to wind the Independent seconds train. Engraved cock with polished steel regulator, compensation balance with blue steel overcoil hairspring. English table roller lever escapement, escape and lever pivots with endstones. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with seconds beating Independent centre seconds, continuous subsidiary seconds. Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Substantial plain 18 carat open face case, clip on back with engraved monogram. Maker's mark “AN” in an oval and number corresponding to that on the movement. Small slide in the band to operate the Independent seconds, the hand beating seconds. Turning the crown in one direction winds the going train and the other winds the seconds train. Velvet lined morocco presentation case.

Independent seconds has the advantage of allowing the seconds hand to be stopped and started without affecting the going train, unlike some simple chronographs of the period. Another benefit was the seconds hand jumping ahead one second at a time. It was however little used as an extra barrel and train were required. A complication very rarely found on Nicole Nielsen's work. Adolphe Nicole took out the patent for keyless winding number 10,348 in 1844. In excellent overall condition

Interestingly the front cover has been replaced shortly after the watch was made. The hour hand is made for a half hunter indicating that the watch originally had a small glass in the front cover but the owner wished to have a full hunter

A 19^th Century English fusee lever with detachable key. Gilt three quarter plate keywind movement with fusee and chain. Harrison's maintaining power. Engraved cock with diamond endstone, polished steel regulator, silver sector index. Compensation balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. English table roller lever escapement. Signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gold hands. Faded engine turned silver open face case with ribbed middle, the movement hinging out. The watch has the appearance of being keyless as it has a winding crown. This is the detachable key: It pulls out of the pendant and may be used to set the hands or wind the watch. Maker's mark “SF” in a rectangle and number corresponding to that on the movement.

Mr. A. J. Lund patented the feature of the detachable key on 29th March 1870, (No. 914). It was probably intended to provide an inexpensive answer to keyless going barrel watches while retaining a fusee. The idea did not seem succesful, very few of these watches surviving. They were made by Usher & Cole and often marketed under the name of Lund Bros from the premises of Barraud & Lund at 41 Cornhill. See Paul Phillipe Barraud by Cedric Jagger, page 72
