Silver Deck Chronometer by Dent

A mid 19^th Century English chronometer by Dent in a silver open face case and mahogany deck box. Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement. Blue steel ratchet click and spring for the barrel setup. Harrison's maintaining power. Plain cock with circular silver inset bearing the broad ministry arrow, diamond endstone. Large compensation balance with freesprung helical blue steel hairspring. Earnshaw type spring detent chronometer escapement, escape pivots with endstones. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, fine blue steel hands. Substantial plain silver open face case with gold hinges, maker's mark “LT” and number corresponding to that on the movement. Fitted in a three tier mahogany deck box with brass furniture. Signed and numbered circular plaque set in the lid bearing the broad ministry arrow. Spare glass and label from the Royal observatory, Greenwich dated 1892.

A fine mid 19th Century English chronometer. The log page for the chronometer shows it was bought from Dent on February 1850 and first served on HMS Vulcan. In July 1861 it was on HMS Hecate, a wood paddle sloop assigned to the Royal Navy Australian Squadron (1859 – 1913). This conducted surveys of Botany Bay, Moreton Bay and Brisbane River in 1863 and 1864. It was returned to the Royal Observatory Greenwich in1871 and was eventually exchanged for hack watches from Usher & Cole on 15th October 1915. Silver Pair Cased Railway Dial Verge

A mid 19^th Century English verge with railway dial in silver pair cases. Full plate fusee movement with round pillars. Pierced and engraved round cock, steel regulator on top plate below the plain three arm steel balance. White enamel dial with a polychrome enamel scene in the centre of a green locomotive pull passenger carriages, the first one open. Roman numerals, gold hands. Matching silver pair cases, silver oval pendant and bow, maker's mark “JB” over “WW” and number corresponding to that on the movement.

Silver English Fusee Lever with Memorial Dial

A mid 19^th Century English lever with memorial dial in a silver open face case. Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement with dust cover. Harrison's maintaining power. Engraved cock with diamond endstone, plain three arm gold balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel regulator, silver sector index. English table roller lever escapement, escape pivots with endstones. Unusual white enamel dial with small subsidiary seconds, the numerals replaced by the name “Charles Jones” and marked “Deceased 1894”, blue steel hands. Engine turned silver open face case, maker's mark “TG”.

In good overall condition, the faded engine turning bearing witness to years of careful use. This is the first dial we have seen marked in this manner. It would appear that on the death of Charles Jones the watch was passed down to someone, probably a son, who decided to have a new dial made in memoriam of its previous owner

Small engine turned silver open face case with ribbed middle, wound and set through the silver cuvette, maker’s mark “JD” and number corresponding to that on the movement.

Tortoiseshell and Gold Purse Watch

A mid 19^th Century Swiss cylinder watch in a fine gold mounted tortoiseshell purse. Keywind gilt bar movement with suspended going barrel. Plain cock with polished steel regulator, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. Small white enamel dial with black Arabic numerals, the twelve in red, blue steel hands. Fine tortoiseshell case in the form of a rectangular purse. Gold hinge and clip. Gold bezel to the dial with a border of small dots of inlaid mother of pearl. Quatrafoil inlaid pierced gold decoration surrounding. Two further bands of inlaid gold wire and mother of pearl dots decorate purse. The back plain apart from a vacant inlaid gold shield shaped cartouche. Inside the purse is divided into four purple lined section, one secured by a gild metal clip. Circular cover to the movement with a turnbuckle covering the winding and set apertures.

The black enamel ground decorated with well painted foliage and forget-me-not flowers. Wound and set through the gold cuvette.
