Rare Silver Half Hunter Pair Cased Verge Pocket Watch

A rare mid 19^th Century English verge, the half hunter dial bearing the original owners name, in silver pair cases. Full plate fusee movement with plain gilt dust cover. Pierced and engraved round cock, steel regulator on top plate below the plain three arm steel balance. Rare half hunter style white enamel dial with a small central chapter of Roman numerals. The outer hour markings replaced by the original owners name, “George Mathews” which are only revealed when the front cover is opened. Gold half hunter hands. Matching silver pair cases, the inner with a broad border to the front bezel, small glazed aperture at the centre. Silver oval pendant and bow, maker's mark “JH” in an oval.

Few English half hunter pair cased watches were made. This is the first we have seen where the outer numerals have been replaced by the owners name

Keywind gilt Lepine calibre movement, two suspended going barrels with polished Geneva stopwork, the larger for the going train. Plain cock, blue steel regulator with temperature compensation curb, polished steel parachute suspension for the top balance pivot. Uncut bimetallic balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Lever escapement with impulse on the pallets. Separate independent train for the centre seconds hand which jumps once each second. Fine engine turned gold dial, applied three colour gold decoration to the centre and outer border. Independent centre seconds, applied gold Roman numerals, blue steel Breguet hands. Engine turned 18 carat open face case with chased and engraved bezels, pendant and bow. Engine turned back with central engraved scene of a mother and child sitting beside a brook. Small slide in the ribbed middle to start and stop the independent seconds. Wound and set through the signed gold cuvette. Dedication engraved on the inside of the back lid to “C J C White – Saratoga Spigs”, a well executed coat of arms above.

In the centre a polychrome enamel oval scene of a lady seated in a garden. Gold pendant set with rubies on a pierced gold and enamel support. The similar finial at the base serves to secure the movement and cover.

Wound and set through the signed gold cuvette. Matching gold key the enamelled hexagonal enamel top also set with small diamonds. Fitted morocco covered case lined with purple velvet.

A mid 19^th Century Swiss verge alarm in a silver gilt open face case. Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement, plain cock with garnet endstone, blue steel regulator. Plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Alarm train with small, partly visible blue steel mainspring, single polished steel hammer striking a bell. White enamel dial with subsidiaries for seconds and alarm set, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Engine turned silver gilt open face case with ribbed middle, flat crown to allow the alarm to be set. Opening the back cover reveals the engraved and pierced inner dome to allow the bell to be heard clearly.

An unusual design for an alarm watch of the period. The one piece dial made without the sinks for the subsidiaries which have been turned after it was fired. Olivier Quartier, Le Locle and Paris, 1776 – 1852 – awarded prizes for wheel cutting machine and balance springs
