French Oignon Pocket Watch with Cartouche Dial
A fine late 17th Century French verge oignon with gilt and enamel cartouche dial in a gilt consular case. Deep full plate fire gilt fusee movement, the slender Egyptian pillars with decorative silver caps. Silver pierced and engraved bridge cock, large three arm steel balance with spiral blue steel hairspring. Decorative pierced and engraved silver affix above the contrate wheel. Small silver index under a blue steel bridge, decorative pierced and engraved silver affixes (one lacking). Wound through the engraved gilt dial set with white enamel cartouches of blue Roman numerals outlined in black for the hours and black Arabic numerals for the minutes, one cartouche restored. Fine blue steel beetle and poker hands, the minute hand with a short tail. Deep gilt metal consular case covered with a gilt shell decoratively chased and engraved, gilt pendant and ring bow.
In excellent overall condition. The majority of oignon watches have the decoration well rubbed, sometimes almost smooth. This example has survived with the engraving still very clearCirca 1700£4,300.00 Read more -
Early English Verge Alarm Pocket Watch
A late 17th Century English single handed verge alarm in silver pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with four Egyptian pillars and a single plain pillar. Fusee and chain with ratchet and click barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved winged cock depicting two birds on the table, broad pierced and engraved foot. Plain steel balance, silver regulator disc on a pierced and engraved plate. Short alarm train, pierced and engraved resting barrel, steel contrate wheel and double headed hammer striking on a bell in the case. Silver champleve dial, the blue steel pointer on the rotating centre indicating the time, Roman numerals, blue steel alarm time hand. Silver inner case decoratively pierced and engraved in a close foliate pattern, later long pendant and bow. Deep silver outer case decorated in chased and engraved repousse work, vacant cartouche in the centre surrounded by four classical busts.

Early English Gilt Verge Alarm Pocket Watch
A late 17th Century English verge alarm in gilt metal pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with five turned baluster pillars. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved winged cock with mask, pierced and engraved foot. Plain steel balance, the arms shaped to allow it to clear the winding square, silver regulator disc. The alarm striking a bell in the case with two polished steel hammers. Engraved resting barrel, blue steel stopwork. Fine later white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, small central white enamel disc set by a female square below the twelve. Fine gold beetle and poker hands, small tail of the hour hand indicating the alarm set time. Unusual pierced and engraved gilt metal pair cases, the inner case constructed without a bezel and the glass fitted to the outer case.

A late 17th Century English verge signed Tompion in later silver pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with Egyptian pillars. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved winged cock with mask and extra screwed steady foot, pierced and engraved foot. Plain steel balance, silver regulator disc. Later white enamel dial, Arabic numerals, gilt hands. Matching silver pair cases hallmarked London 1777, maker’s mark “WL”.

The inner with rotating shutter to the winding aperture, maker's mark “BO” and number corresponding to that on the movement. The plain silver outer case with maker's mark “IL” in a rectangle.

Signed silver champleve dial, Roman and Arabic numerals, fine gilt beetle and poker hands. Silver pair cases, the inner with split bezel and maker's mark “IW”. Plain silver outer case with seven joint square hinge.
A fine example which is unusually signed for the maker of the case. The “IW” incuse mark is on the 1682 plate and was registered again by John Willoughby as a Britannia silver mark in 1697. He was born circa 1665 and apprenticed to Thomas Howe, a watch case maker, 29th September 1679 for seven years. Free of the Clockmakers Company 1686. In 1695 he was assessed at St. Sepulchre Parish with his wife Mary, four children, John, Benjamin, Grace, and Mary, together with three servants. His son, also John was apprenticed to him 3rd July 1704. He is also listed in Baillies as a watchmaker, Free of the Clockmakers Company 1686 – 1710. It is very unusual to find a watch signed by the maker of the case as even at this early date manufacture was split into many specialised trades. An unusual late 17th Century English verge, the silver champleve dial with sector for regulating the watch in silver pair cases. Deep full plate fire gilt movement with Egyptian pillars. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved winged cock with mask, pierced and engraved foot. Plain steel balance. Signed silver champleve dial, blue steel and gilt sector of a disc visible below the twelve for regulating the watch with a female square. Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Silver pair cases, plain inner with split bezel, silver pendant and later ring bow, maker's mark “LD”. Plain outer with seven joint square hinge.
A rare variation allowing the watch to be regulated through the dial. The shaft of the disc runs through the hollow centre of the mainspring barrel arbor. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Pierced and engraved winged cock with mask, pierced and engraved foot. Plain steel balance, silver regulator disc. Signed silver champleve dial, rectangular aperture below the centre for the date, Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Matching silver pair cases, split bezel, circular shutter to the winding aperture, silver pendant and bow. Seven joint square hinge to the outer case, both cases with maker’s mark “I W” and number corresponding to that on the movement.
