Gold Quarter Repeating Musical Watch

An early 19^th Century Swiss quarter repeating musical watch with cartouche dial in a gold open face case. Gilt movement with two resting barrels, the larger barrel, being half the diameter of the movement, providing the power for the musical train. Polished steel stopwork to both barrels. Plain sector shaped cock, polished steel coqueret, polished steel regulator. Plain gilt balance with spiral spring, polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. Polished steel work on back plate to control the disc type musical train and a steel “Strike – Silent” lever. Push pendant quarter repeating on two steel gongs, the repeating work situated under the dial. Lateral slide in the band to actuate the musical mechanism, music also playing automatically on the hour. Signed gold dial with engine turned centre, enamel minute ring and cartouches of Arabic numerals, blue steel Breguet hands. Plain gold open face case, engine turned middle. Signed gilt cuvette with apertures for winding and hand set.

Seven Decorative Watch Keys

A collection of seven watch keys. The earliest an 18th Century gilt metal crank with one square for winding and setting the watch, the other for adjusting the mainspring barrel tension. The other six. Three early 19th Century watch keys ratchet keys, one an elegant long gold key with wire wound body set with a small red stone, a simple silver ratchet key and the third later gilt key with circular open body and visible spiral spring. Two further early 19th Century keys, one a small gold key set with a trapezoid shaped bloodstone, the other a long engraved silver key set with an oval yellow stone. A late 19th Century gilt metal key in the form of a pistol resembling a colt revolver.

Massey Type I Silver Pair Case Pocket Watch By Massey

An early 19^th Century English Massey I lever in silver pair cases. Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement with plain gilt dust cover. Harrison’s maintaining power. Engraved cock with diamond endstone, stamped on the underside of the foot “EM – P – 2672”. Blue steel Bosley regulator, plain three arm steel balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Massey type one lever escapement, thirty tooth escape wheel. Early form of banking with the pins formed together and screwed on the top plate. Off white enamel dial, Roman numerals, gold hands. Matching plain silver pair cases, silver oval pendant and bow, maker’s mark “WB” in an oval.

In excellent overall condition. Edward Massey of Coventry and London developed the crank roller escapement which has five variations. He retailed few watches under his own name but made them for other makers. The underside of the cock not only bears his initials and serial number but also the stamp of the ebauche supplier, “TB” in a rectangle. This is repeated on the dust cover. S J Whitwell has not marked the movement with a number or town

A fine large early 19^th Century quarter repeating ruby cylinder by Breguet in a gold open face case. Keywind gilt bar movement with the watch number stamped on the plate under the dial, suspended going barrel with polished steel stopwork. Plain cock with polished steel parachute suspension, blue steel regulator with bi-metallic temperature compensation. Plain three arm gold balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Breguet suspended ruby cylinder, small steel escape wheel. Push quarter repeating on two polished steel gongs. Signed engine turned gold dial numbered on the reverse, Roman numerals, blue steel Breguet hands. Engine turned gold open face case with engine turned middle. Gold repeating push in the pendant which is pulled out and twisted a quarter of a turn before use. Wound through the signed and numbered gilt metal cuvette. Maker's mark “JJL” in a diamond and number corresponding to that on the movement in the back cover together with casemaker's mark “T” and the number 2400. Accompanied by an official Breguet certificate taken from the original archives.

Engraved cock with diamond endstone, polished steel regulator with silver sector index. Plain three arm gold balance with deep rim, blue steel spiral hairspring. English table roller lever escapement. Signed and numbered white enamel dial, Roman numerals, gilt hands. Purpose made 18 carat open face case hallmarked 1874, engine turned back with vacant shield shaped cartouche. Maker's mark “HB” and number corresponding to that on the movement.

Unusually for this period the watch has a 19,800 train.

Earnshaw type spring detent chronometer escapement with adjustable dovetailed foot. Gold dial with engine turned centre, subsidiary seconds, applied gold Roman numerals on a matted ground. Blue steel seconds hand, gold hands. Plain 18 carat consular case, maker's mark “LC”.

In excellent overall condition. See “The English Watch” by Terence Camerer Cuss, page 349 for a very similar chronometer by Pennington. William Haddack was a leading retailer of the time who appears to have chosen high quality makers. Casemaker Louis Comptesse.

A good example of early 19th Century English watchmaking in excellent overall condition. Casemaker Louis Comptesse whose mark is found on the best English cases of the period.
