Silver Quarter Repeating French Automaton Pocket Watch

An early 19^th Century French quarter repeating verge automaton in a silver open face case. Full plate gilt fusee movement. Semi-circular engraved bridge for the fusee and barrel supporting the finely pierced and engraved bridge cock, polished steel endstone in a polished steel setting. Plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Blued regulator dial with blue steel indicator. Pendant quarter repeating on two gongs. Small white enamel dial with Roman numerals, pierced gilt hands. Either side of the dial are three colour gilt chased and engraved classical figures fixed above the plate and polished steel repeating work. As the watch strikes the hours and quarters the arms of the figures move as though striking the bells between them. Silver open face case with ribbed middle, plain back. Push pendant for the repeat, wound through the plain sprung brass cuvette.

An early 19^th Century Swiss quarter repeating duplex in a silver open face case. Keywind gilt Lepine calibre movement with suspended going barrel. Plain cock with blue steel regulator. Plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Duplex escapement. Push pendant quarter repeating on two steel gongs. Fine engine turned silver dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel hands. Plain silver open face case, silver push pendant and bow. wound and set through the sprung gilt cuvette inscribed “Echappement a Duplex Garni en Pierre – Huit Trous en Rubis Fin”.

It is very unusual to find a continental repeater with a duplex escapement. The cylinder escapement was almost universally used at this time

Alarm train with small resting barrel, single polished steel hammer striking a bell. Winding through the white enamel dial, Arabic numerals, three blue steel hands. Engine turned silver open face case with engine turned middle, flat crown to allow the alarm to be set. Opening the back cover reveals the engraved and pierced inner dome to allow the bell to be heard clearly.

A collection of 10 19^th Century decorative watch keys and a silver swivel fob. The gilt, silver and gold shelled keys include six set with semi-precious stones. One of the gilt metal keys is a folding example with a bloodstone on one side and a black agate stone with a white stripe on the other. Winding through the fully restored enamel dial, small white chapter with Arabic numerals set on a gilt bezel, blue steel hands. Fully restored dark blue enamel over an engine turned ground. Either side of the dial are finely chased and engraved parcel gilt military figures apparently representing Napoleon and Wellington. As the watch strikes the hours and quarters the arms of the figures move as though striking the small bells between them with their swords. Engine turned 18 carat gold open face case with reeded middle. Gold push pendant, gilt metal cuvette

A very rare and interesting subject for the automaton figures. It may have been made to commemorate the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

Gilt English Debaufre Pocket Watch

An early 19^th Century English Debaufre in a gilt open face case. Full plate gilt keywind movement with resting barrel, polished steel Geneva stopwork. Pierced and engraved bridge cock with polished steel coqueret. Plain three arm polished steel balance with blue steel spiral hairspring, gilt Bosley regulator. Debaufre escapement employing two polished steel escape wheels acting alternately on a single steel roller. Winding through the white enamel dial, Roman numerals, gold hands. Plain gilt metal open face case, the movement hinging out at 9 o'clock, , maker's mark “WB” in a rectangle.

A rare escapement, also known as a chaffcutter, Ormskirk or club footed verge. It was the first frictional rest escapement invented by Debaufre in 1704. Rarely used until it was taken up by Lancashire makers early in the 19th Century. The escapement is not affected by variations in power as was the case with the verge and some watches dispense with the fusee.
