Engraved cock with diamond endstone in a polished steel setting, polished steel regulator. Heavy compensation balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Earnshaw type spring detent chronometer escapement, escape pivots with endstones. Signed white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel seconds hand with gold arbor, gold hands. Substantial plain 18 carat full hunter case, oval pendant and bow. Front and back cover with dust proof recesses sharing the same hinge at nine o’clock, maker’s mark “DW”.

Silver Pair Cased Debaufre

An early 19^th Century English debaufre in silver pair cases. Full plate gilt keywind movement, the resting barrel formed from a series of strong pins leaving the blue steel mainspring exposed. Chased and engraved cock with polished steel pivot screw to adjust the end shake. Plain three arm polished steel balance with blue steel spiral hairspring, blue steel Bosley regulator. Debaufre escapement employing two polished steel escape wheels acting alternately on a single steel roller. White enamel dial with Roman numerals, gold hands. Matching silver pair cases, silver oval pendant and bow, maker's mark “TE – HF”

In excellent overall condition. A rare escapement, also known as a chaffcutter, Ormskirk or club footed verge. It was the first frictional rest escapement invented by Debaufre in 1704. Rarely used until it was taken up by Lancashire makers early in the 19th Century. The escapement is not affected by variations in power as was the case with the verge and some watches dispense with the fusee. It is surprising they left mainspring exposed rather than enclosing it. 15 Seconds Dial Rack Lever with Compensation Pocket Watch

An early 19^th Century English rack lever with 15 second subsidiary and Liverpool window jewelling in silver pair cases. Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement with plain gilt dust cover. Chased and engraved cock inscribed “Patent” on the foot, diamond endstone. Polished steel Bosley regulator with bi-metallic temperature compensation curb. Plain polished steel balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Large Liverpool window screwed in jewelling. Rack lever escapement with thirty tooth escape wheel, adjustable slides to the lever. Off white enamel dial, subsidiary seconds marked to fifteen seconds, the hand mounted on the escape wheel arbor rotating four times every minute. Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gilt hands. Well fitted in contemporary silver pair cases, lateral steel stop lever.

Tobias Isaac Tobias was trained by Morris Tobias. He took watches to the United States in 1816 to sell and later settled there becoming a successful merchant. Probably less than ten watches bearing his signature survive

Steel regulator on top plate below the plain three arm steel balance. Winding through the decorative gold dial, engine turned centre, applied gold Roman numerals on a matted ground, gold hands. Single bodied engine turned 18 carat open face case with reeded bezels, middle, pendant and bow. Sprung front bezel opened by a button in the pendant, the movement hinge at nine o'clock, maker's mark “IR”.

Rare English Tic Tac Escapement Watch

A very rare early 19^th Century English patent Tic Tac escapement gilt pair cased watch. Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement with dust cover. Chased and engraved bell shaped cock with garnet endstone, blue steel Bosley regulator, plain three arm polished steel balance with gold spiral hairspring. Very rare patent Tic Tac escapement, thirty tooth escape wheel acting on a jewelled roller on the balance staff. A slot in the roller simply allows the balance to be given impulse in one direction as it passes the tip of the tooth, escape pivots with endstones. Flat white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand with gold arbor, fine gold hands with heart shaped ends. Gilt metal pair cases, oval pendant and bow.

A very rare watch in excellent overall condition. This is the first pocket watch we have seen with this form of escapement. It is stamped under the dial and cock “Marsh & Co – 106 – Patentees”. Thomas Marsh, son of Anthony, apprenticed 1770. Watch with his escapement in the Science Museum, South Kensington, patented in 1811.

Unusually the calendar is set by hand. The watch has been made without any automatic mechanism and it would not be possible to fit one unless a thicker dial plate was used.
