Gold Watch by John Roger Arnold

An early 19^th Century English chronometer converted to lever by Arnold in a gold consular case. Full plate gilt keywind fusee movement, blue steel double tooth barrel spring setup and spring. Harrison's maintaining power. Engraved cock with diamond endstone, large “Z” type compensation balance, the arms with adjustable weights on threads at their free end. Blue steel freesprung helical hairspring on an ajustable stud. Well converted to English table roller lever escapement, a gilt plate covering the detent slot. Screwed in jewelling left in their original positions, small jewels for the lever pivots between them. Signed and numbered white enamel dial with subsidiary seconds, Roman numerals, fine gold hands. Substantial plain 18 carat consular case, the back and front bezel sharing a common hinge. Maker's mark “TH” in a rectangle and number corresponding to that on the movement.

An attractive large watch. The underside of the barrel is is scratched “Arnold” and below it in a different hand “& Dent”. This, together with the quality suggests the upgrade was carried out when the business was trading under the name Arnold and Dent

Matching silver pair cases, silver pendant and bow, maker's mark “IC” and number corresponding to that on the movement.

Silver Gilt Doctors Dial Verge

An early 19^th Century English doctors dial verge signed for the original owner in silver gilt pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with round pillars. Gilt plate engraved with the owners name placed over the makers name, “Willm Brice Sandwich”. Pierced and engraved cock, engraved plate for the silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Lateral blue steel stop lever. Signed flat white enamel dial, the subsidiary seconds of Arabic numerals intersecting the offset chapter for time above with Roman numerals, blue steel seconds hand, gilt hands. Plain silver gilt pair cases, the gilt worn from the outer case, maker's mark “IT” over “IW”.

An interesting watch in excellent condition. The signature on the dial is fired in when it was made but the plate for the signature has been placed over the makers name (listed in Baillies 1795). This is dated one year before the hallmark date of the case, perhaps due to London marks being changed in May. George Minter, a cabinet maker in Sandwich, married Mary Debock in December 1804. Interestingly another George Minter, possibly his father, married Sarah Debock in 1771. He died in 1824. A transcription of his will accompanies the watch.

Silver Pair Cased Automaton Verge

A rare 19^th Century English verge with polychrome enamel dial showing the changing of the guard in silver pair cases. Full plate fusee movement with round pillars. Pierced and engraved round cock, gilt regulator on top plate below the plain three arm steel balance. White enamel dial with Arabic numerals, gilt hands. In the centre of the dial a polychrome enamel scene depicting a stone tower of a fortress with soldiers in red tunics standing to attention beside it. An arched doorway at the base is pierced to reveal an ivory disc with six soldiers painted on it. As the watch runs the soldiers pass the door and so depict the changing of the guard. Matching silver pair cases, silver oval pendant and bow, maker's mark “MC”.

In excellent overall condition, a rare subject for the automaton

Winding through the signed white enamel dial, Arabic numerals, gold hands. Small spherical gold case opened by pressing a button in the long gold pendant. The case covered in black enamel decorated with white champleve enamel. Inside the lid a pierced gold cover forming a vinaigrette Matching gold and enamel chain and tipsy ratchet key. In a small fitted presentation case of red morocco lined in cream velvet.

A vinaigrette in a small form watch is unusual. The addition of a matching chain and key is a welcome bonus

An early 19^th Century Swiss verge in a gold and enamel case and diamond set chatelaine. Full plate gilt fusee movement. Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with steel coqueret, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator dial. Round pillars. Winding through the fully restored white enamel dial, Arabic numerals, gilt Breguet hands. Gold case in the form of a shell, the front cover decorated in fully restored dark blue enamel. The back with a fully restored polychrome scene of a cherub with an instrument at his feet, a section of the scene comprised of gold rectangles set with small split pearls. Gold chatelaine with central oval cartouche of blue, white and green enamel overlaid by a diamond set floral motif. Two bell shaped decorations enamelled in similar colours hang from the oval cartouche. Suspended from a later 9 carat pin brooch.

Gold Repeating Automaton Pocket Watch with Erotic Scene

An early 19^th Century Swiss quarter repeating verge automaton with concealed erotic scene in a gold open face case. Full plate gilt fusee movement. Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock, garnet endstone in a polished steel setting, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator dial with blue steel indicator. Pendant quarter repeating on two gongs. Small white enamel chapter ring with Arabic numerals, blue steel hands. Either side of the dial are finely chased and engraved parcel gilt classical figures fixed above the decorative engraved plate and polished steel repeating work. As the watch strikes the hours and quarters the arms of the figures move as though striking the bells between them. Below the chapter ring the small parcel gilt cover can be slid aside to reveal a couple embracing on a couch. As the watch strikes the man springs into action, continuing until the repeating train stops. Plain 18 carat gold open face case with reeded bezels and ribbed middle. Gold push pendant, gold slide in the band to operate the cover, wound through the gilt metal cuvette.

Silver gilt oval dial decorated with champleve black, red and green translucent enamel. Circular white enamel chapter of Roman numerals, decorative pierced gold hands. The case made in the style of an early 17th Century octagonal rock crystal watch. Faceted glass body and cover in hinged silver gilt frames decorated with champleve black, red and green translucent enamel. The octagonal buckle similarly decorated, the frame securing a deep bevel glass over a painting of an early 17th Century lady wearing a ruff. Three pierced silver gilt chains, also decorated with champleve black, red and green translucent enamel, matching key on a light silver chain.

An unusual form watch, probably produced in Vienna using a French movement.
