Unusual Silver Calendar Verge

An early 19^th Century French verge with calendar and seconds in a silver drum shaped case. Full plate gilt fusee movement. Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with steel coqueret, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator dial with blue steel indicator. Wound through the signed white enamel dial, subsidiaries for seconds, date and day in French. Arabic numerals, gilt subsidiary hands, blue steel hands. Unusual drum shaped plain silver open face case, the top plate of the movement almost as large a the dial plate, movement secured by two screws. The back with maker’s mark “J – B over “M” in a diamond and French hallmarks.

Double Sided Mock Pendulum Verge with Compass

A rare double sided French verge with mock pendulum and compass in a silver case. Full plate gilt fusee movement under a signed engine turned mask, glazed circular aperture revealing the engraved bridge cock. Gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring, mock pendulum visible through the semi-circular aperture, diamond endstone in a polished steel setting. The regulator dial engraved on the silver mask above the balance cock, blue steel indicator. Engine turned silver dial, subsidiary marked in Roman numerals for time a six o’clock, the gilt hands set by the central square. Subsidiaries for functioning compass and seconds, both in glazed circular apertures. Applied oval gold cartouche at twelve engraved with a monogram. Silver case with engine turned middle glazed on both sides, broad oval pendant and bow.

Large Silver Skull Watch

A late 18^th Century French verge with Masonic silver dial in an unusual large silver case in the form of a skull. Full plate gilt fusee movement. Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with steel coqueret, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator dial with blue steel indicator. Silver dial, the numerals replaced with raised representations of Masonic symbols. Engraved in the centre “Sage Se Mosseur Vert C aui Jamais Se Repose Cest L Heroisme Du Magon”. Gilt Breguet hands. Substantial large cast silver case in the form of a skull. Realistically modelled with deep eye sockets, nasal passages and carved teeth. The top of the skull engraved with scenes including a skeleton and the Garden of Eden in medieval style. Hinged at the back, opening to reveal the dial. Pierced and engraved band to the centre, the watchmaker’s name engraved at the base of the skull.

An early 19^th Century English verge with an unusual form of windmill automaton in silver pair cases. Full plate fusee movement with round pillars. Pierced and engraved round cock, gilt regulator on top plate below the plain three arm steel balance. Rare polychrome enamel dial depicting a church on the left indicating the time on a clock in the tower, Roman numerals, gilt hands. On the right a windmill, the engraved gold sails rotating rapidly counter-clockwise as they are mounted on a pinion which is driven be an extra set of teeth on the edge of the contrate wheel. Plain silver pair cases, wound and set from the back, the aperture for the setting indicated by an engraved pair of hands. Silver pendant and bow, maker's mark “CS” in a rectangle.

Pierced and engraved round cock, unusual gilt regulator on top plate adjusted by a square in the engraved plate. Plain three arm steel balance. Convex white enamel dial, the central polychrome enamel scene with checkerboard floor, all seeing eye, beehive and ark. The sun, moon and some of the tools picked out in gilt, gold arrow hands. Matching silver pair cases, silver pendant and bow, maker's mark “TC” in a rectangle.

Attractive cock pierced and engraved in a close pattern of concentric circles. Unusual regulator, the square in a blue steel disc, a blue steel indicating to an index on the plate. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Rare white enamel dial, the numerals replaced by “W. Ashmore. 1803”, probably the original owner's name, blue steel hands. Matching silver pair cases, silver oval pendant and bow, maker's mark “WH” in a rectangle.

Watches which have the numerals replaced by the owner's are not common but this is the first we have seen which includes the year

An early 19^th Century verge with polychrome enamel dial of historical United States interest in silver repousse pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with square baluster pillars. Pierced and engraved bridge cock, pierced and engraved plate for the silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. White enamel dial, the centre with a polychrome enamel scene of depicting a sailor waiving to a three masted man of war flying the “First Navy Jack” of the United States. Roman and Arabic numerals, arcaded minute ring, later pierced hands. Plain silver inner case, maker's mark “WL” and number corresponding to that on the movement. Chased and engraved silver repousse outer case with a classical scene of three figures within a rococo frame.
