English Silver Verge with Champleve Dial

An 18^th Century English verge with silver champleve dial in a silver consular case. Full plate fire gilt movement with square baluster pillars. Pierced and engraved cock, pierced and engraved foot and plate for the silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Winding through the signed silver champleve dial, Roman and Arabic numerals, blue steel beetle and poker hands. Decoratively engraved silver consular case, silver pendant and bow, maker's mark “I.B”.

Very Rare Sully Escapement Quarter Repeater

A very rare late 18^th Century French quarter repeater with Sully's escapement in a silver consular case. Deep full plate fire gilt fusee movement with five slender turned pillars. Small pierced and engraved cock with unusual forked foot, garnet endstone in a polished steel setting. Polished steel regulator set below the plain three arm gilt balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Very rare Sully type frictional rest escapement. Vertical brass escape wheel, the teeth with double impulse faces acting on two polished steel pallets mounted directly on the balance staff. Push pendant quarter repeating on a bell in the case. Winding through the signed white enamel dial, Roman numerals, gilt beetle and poker hands. Plain silver consular case, silver push pendant.

A very rare form of escapement, possibly less than ten exist. Few were produced, mainly by French makers and this is the only one known with repeating work. See Chamberlain's Its About Time page 149 for a description of the escapement and page 319 for a short biography of Henry Sully who developed the escapement based on Debaufre's design in about 1720. An article about the escapement by Charles Allix is in the Winter 1980 edition of Antiquarian Horology. In excellent condition the movement shows evidence of experimentation that was not fully developed by the maker

Finely pierced and engraved bridge cock with steel coqueret, plain three arm gilt balance with blue steel spiral hairspring. Silver regulator dial with blue steel indicator. Winding through the white enamel dial, Roman and Arabic numerals, decorative gilt hands. Gold consular case, the engraved bezels decorated with translucent dark blue champleve enamel. The back of translucent dark blue enamel over an engine turned ground decorated with gilt stars and bordered by a row of small enamel faux pearls.

Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. White enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, fine gold arrow hands. Gilt metal pair cases, gilt pendant and bow. Plain gilt inner, maker's mark “IW” in a rectangle. Gilt outer covered in translucent horn underpainted fern, ladybirds, ants and butterflies.

Unusually the watch is signed and dated for the original lady owner showing it was specially ordered . In excellent condition

Crucifix Form Watch

An 18^th Century watch in the style of a 17th Century rock crystal crucifix form watch. Crucifix shaped full plate gilt movement, decoratively engraved plate, three square baluster pillars. Pierced and engraved oval cock, pierced and engraved foot. Fusee and gut with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Small plain two arm steel balance without hairspring. Silver gilt dial decorated with champleve light green enamel, small oval framed depiction of Adam and Eve. Small silver chapter of Roman numerals, single blue steel hand. Very unusual crucifix shaped case in the style of an early 17th Century rock crystal watch. Thick bevel glasses in silver bezels decorated with blue and green champleve enamel. The movement fixed to a silver gilt frame from which the glazed sides are hinged in eight separate sections. Fixed cast silver finial and pendant with ring bow.

An interesting watch constructed in a similar fashion to English work of the mid 18th Century but without a hairspring. Almost certainly made as a novelty at that time rather than as an attempt to deceive. Two almost identical watches are in the State Historical Cultural Museum, Moscow Kremlin and The Vacheron and Constantin collection.
