Cut Steel Chatelaine and Accessories

A mid 18^th Century cut steel chatelaine with oval enamel portrait. Openwork steel buckle decorated with faceted cut steel pins supporting six cut steel chains. The centre two for the watch and the others for accessories. Three accessories attached – one a gilt filigree owl, a stone set gilt seal inscribed “Mary” and a very unusual small pen knife in the form of an underpainted horn covered shoe. Sprung cut steel latches with threaded locking collars, one damaged.

Skeletonised English Verge with Painted Dial

A mid 18^th Century English skeletonised verge with polychrome enamel dial in gilt metal pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with pierced and engraved skeletonised top plate, three turned pillars. Pierced and engraved cock set with the silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Plain six arm polished steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. White enamel dial with polychrome enamel scene of a hunter and his dog in the centre, Roman and Arabic numerals, gilt beetle and poker hands. Unusual gilt metal pair cases, the back of the inner case glazed to reveal the movement. The inner constructed without a bezel and the glass fitted to the decoratively engraved outer case.

Enamel Patch Box in the Form of a Watch

A rare mid 18^th Century English Staffordshire enamel patch box in the form of a pair cased watch of the period. The back decorated with polychrome flowers in light relief on a puce ground. The front of the box enamelled with a representation of a watch dial of the period, the painted hands set at seven minutes past five. Hinged brass bezels, pendant and stirrup bow, the interior in plain white counter enamel.

A rare box in good condition apart from some minor damage to the front bezel

A mid 18^th Century English quarter repeating cylinder in 22 carat gold repousse pair cases. Full plate fire gilt fusee movement, gilt dust cover pierced to reveal the regulator disc and diamond endstone. Pierced and engraved cock, pierced and engraved plate for the silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Polished steel cylinder, steel escape wheel. Push pendant quarter repeating on a bell in the back of the case. Later white enamel dial with Roman numerals, pierced gilt hands. Pierced and engraved gold inner case, gold push pendant and bow. Gold outer case, the repousse back decorated with a classical scene of a soldier and a woman, pierced and engraved around the edge and on the front bezel.

The movement appears to be a purpose made replacement as the bell has been drilled a second time to accommodate it

Push pendant quarter repeating on a bell in the case. Wound through the signed white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, decorative pierced stone set hands. Gold consular case, engraved and line pierced to allow the bell to sound clearly. Front bezel with a border of stones in a white metal setting bordering the dial. The back with applied gold floral decoration, red and green champleve enamel. A small stone set circle is bordered by a band of dark translucent enamel over an engine turned ground.

Pentagonal baluster pillars. Wound through the white enamel dial with Roman and Arabic numerals, fine gold hands. Miniature engraved 20 carat gold consular case, the back decorated with a polychrome enamel scene of three figures. Matching chatelaine of three oval graduated polychrome enamel plaques mounted in gold frames, the buckle with gilt clasp and two short chains.

A rare 18^th Century skeletonised quarter repeating Swiss verge with glass dial in a stone set consular case. Full plate fusee movement with three round pillars. The plate and barrel cover pierced and engraved to reveal the trains and blue steel mainspring. Engraved cock, polished steel coqueret set with a garnet, small circular blue steel regulator geared to a plate carrying the index pins. Plain three arm steel balance. Push pendant a toc quarter repeating on two blocks in the case. Winding through the rare glass dial which reveals the polished steel quarter repeating work below. Underpainted white Arabic numerals, decorative gold hands. Double sided two colour gold consular case, the bezels set with a row of white stones.

Skeletonised repeating watches of the period are very rare. The use of a glass dial to show the quarter repeating work makes this example even more desirable

A rare mid 18^th Century Bilston patch box in the form of a watch and gilt chatelaine with accessories. The box a realistic representation of a watch of the period, the pierced gilt hands under a glass. Bilston enamel case of green and white decorated with polychrome flowers. The gilt bezels hinged to allow the box to open. Gilt metal chatelaine with three rows of chains. Small pierced buckle with four short chains each with a hinged clip secured by a threaded collar. The accessories consist of a small heart shaped fob, a gilt key a stone set seal and a gold 1768 half guinea.

Silver Pair Cased Centre Seconds Verge

A fine mid 18^th Century English centre seconds verge in silver pair cases. Full plate fire gilt movement with signed and numbered gilt dust cover. Pierced and engraved masked cock, silver regulator disc. Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Lateral steel stop lever operating on the escape wheel. White enamel dial with centre seconds, Roman numerals, gold beetle and poker hands, later gilt minute hand. Substantial matching silver pair cases, silver pendant and bow, maker's mark “D*B” in a rectangle.

In excellent overall condition. Centre seconds watches of the period are uncommon. Most were made with cylinder escapements but this one is rare in having a verge. There were also few makers in Manchester, this is a low numbered example
