Antique pocket watches for sale don’t come in much higher esteem than that of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and his was auctioned on Tuesday in London for €670,000 (£491,342).
The watch which belonged to the man who is widely seen as a symbol of the victory of the Allies in World War II, was sold for a staggering eight times more than the forecasted price tag.
It is one of a collection of four watches presented by prominent Swiss citizens to the Allied leaders Churchill, Charles de Gaulle, Henry Truman, and Joseph Stalin in a show of appreciation for their efforts during the Second World War.
Sotheby’s auction house made the decision to auction off the watch on the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II and the 50th anniversary of Churchill’s death, defining the movement as a “historical testimony to leadership and a symbol of courage”.
