Description

A rare late 18th Century English half quarter repeating centre seconds cylinder by Mudge and Dutton in gold pair cases.  Full plate fire gilt movement with signed gilt dust cover.  Pierced and engraved masked cock with diamond endstone, silver regulator disc. Fusee and chain with worm and wheel barrel setup between the plates. Plain three arm polished steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring. Push pendant dumb half quarter repeating on two polished steel blocks in the case.  Polished steel cylinder, large steel escape wheel.  Lateral steel stop lever.  White enamel dial with centre seconds, Roman and Arabic numerals, polished steel seconds hand, gold beetle and poker hands.  Plain gold pair cases, gold pendant and bow, inner with maker's mark “ITP”.  Purpose made outer case hallmarked London 1804, maker's mark “IM”.  Large gold oval key set with a glass.

A fine late example of a watch by Thomas Mudge and William Dutton who worked until 1790. It is interesting to note that the casemakers mark of John Terrill Pain (7 Dean Street after October 1776) has been overstruck by the smaller mark “IM” found on the outer
